Transportation to Villach

By Train

Villach is a major railway hub in Austria with excellent national and international connections. Direct trains run from major Austrian cities such as Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck, and Linz. International routes connect Villach with cities like Munich, Zurich, Venice, Ljubljana and Zagreb.

Overnight trains also pass through Villach en route to destinations including Florence, Milan, Rome, Stuttgart, and Zurich.

By Bus

The FlixBus long-distance bus network to and from Villach, which operates daily, connects several destinations in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany. In Villach, the FlixBus stops directly at the bus station opposite Villach main railway station.

By Car

If you are travelling from the north, take the A10 Tauernautobahn. From the east (Graz or Vienna), use the A2 Südautobahn. Travellers coming from Slovenia should take the A11 Karawankenautobahn, while those arriving from Italy can also reach Villach via the A2 Südautobahn.

The motorway around Villach offers two convenient exits: Faaker See, which leads directly to the city center, and Ossiacher See, which provides access to the northern part of the city.

By Plane

The nearest airport to Villach is Klagenfurt Airport (KLU), located approximately 40 km away. It offers regular direct flights from cities such as Alicante, Brussels, Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Munich, and Rotterdam. The drive to Villach takes about 30–40 minutes via the A2 Südautobahn.

From Klagenfurt Airport to Villach by public transport

Klagenfurt Annabichl station is located approximately 750 meters from the airport terminal and can be reached on foot in about 7–10 minutes. From there, ÖBB S-Bahn Line S1 runs hourly to Villach Hauptbahnhof (main station). The journey takes around 35 minutes. Tickets are available at station machines or online via the ÖBB website or mobile app.

An alternative is Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia, approximately 100 km from Villach. It serves a wider range of international destinations and may be suitable for long-haul travelers. Villach can be reached by train. Direct international trains run several times daily from Ljubljana to Villach Hauptbahnhof. Tickets are available online or at the station.

From Ljubljana Airport to Villach by public transport

First, take the public shuttle bus or an airport transfer to the central train and bus station in Ljubljana. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. For more information, visit:

From Ljubljana Main Station, take a direct train to Villach Hauptbahnhof (Villach Hbf). The journey usually lasts around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Trains run regularly; tickets can be purchased online or at the station.

Transportation in Villach

Villach is a small town, making it easy to explore on foot. Taxis are readily available near the main railway station and at Hauptplatz in the city center.

Regional and long-distance buses depart from the Busbahnhof (bus terminal), located just a few minutes from Villach Hauptbahnhof (main railway station). Villach also has a local bus network providing good connections within the town, including the city center.
